Special thanks to these five seniors who left there mark on Cornell College and ended their careers with the best season in Cornell Basketball History!

Sooo Sooo Close !!!

Cornell could taste a NCAA tournament victory as they battled against #4 UW Stevens Point in the first round of the tournament. The winner would face the #1 team in the country St. Thomas. The Rams proved they could hang with a top team in the country, but just a few close games in the regular season the Rams could not quite get it done. The Pointers pull out the victory 61-53.

In the first half you could tell Cornell was a little nervous. Maybe it was the big crowd or the heightened importance but Cornell was taken by the big game atmosphere. However, Stevens Point had been there before and it showed as they opened the game on an 8-0 run. Many fans thought the game was going to be a blowout as Stevens Point established a 12 point lead midway through the first half. Cornell on the other hand started to settle down and narrowed the gap to just 8 at half, 34-26. Khalifa El-Amin led the Steven’s Point hot shooting with 15 points coming off of 5 from 7 from three point land. Griffin LaDew helped the Rams stay close with 11 first half points.

In the second half Cornell proved they could make some adjustments and started to believe they belonged. The Rams opened the second half with a 12-6 run, getting within 2 points with 14 minutes remaining. The Pointer’s answered the Rams and pushed the led back up to 10, 53 to 43 with 7:13 go to. The game looked to be out of hand until Cornell got hot. Senior’s Griffin LaDew and Michael Tierney both hit back to back 3 point shots as Cornell answered with a 10-0 run. With 3:43 remaining the game was at a stand still at 53-53. Down the stretch Cornell would struggle to finish as they missed two lay-ups and had a few 3 point shot attempts roll out. The Pointer’s were able to finish the game at the line and the Ram’s spectacular season came to an end in a 61-53 defeat.

The Ram’s were led in scoring by Griffin LaDew’s 17 points. Chris Handke added 10 points and collected 7 rebounds. Michael Tierney also dropped in 9 points and grabbed a team high 8 rebounds. The Pointer’s were led in scoring by Khalifa El-Amin and Matt Moses who each dropped in 17 points. The Rams were able to hold Stevens Point to 37.5% field goal percentage, who average near 50%.

Best thing about Cornell: The best thing about Cornell would have to be the friends I made and the people I got to meet. Being able to travel for basketball was also a great experience.

Most memorable basketball moment: There were so many memorable moments, as I think back, but the one that stood out in my mind was getting the opportunity to play against Drake University my senior year. Playing Northern Illinois was a great experience as well.

What you are doing today (career) and how you got to your career: Currently I teach 7th grade social studies at ClarkeMiddle School in Osceola. I’m also the head varsity baseball coach and assistant varsity boy’s basketball coach.

Favorite quote or advice for current players: "Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision; the ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results."
